Dads

Well, today is that day where we think of our Dads.  Good or bad, seen or unseen, we all do it because it's the name of the day.  Some of us have fabulous memories, like fishing trips or camping, some of us have disappointments like an apologetic phone call that he can't make it to an important event.  Maybe it's all of them.  Maybe it's none at all. So here's hoping that a previous experience can be replaced with a present one.

Today my husband shared his day with our seven-year-old.  He's super lucky because other years he gets to share his day with his daughter, whose birthday is in four days but sometimes falls on Father's Day.  Like the day she was born.  We're not much for planning around here; I also have a son whose birthday sometimes falls on Mother's Day though this year he was super excited because his birthday was on a Monday and that meant he didn't have to do extra things for me on his birthday.  It's okay, I feel the love.

That's the difference between Mother's Day and Father's Day.  I made hubby breakfast (and it was good).  But we tend to do fun things together for Father's Day.  On Mother's Day, with the exception of last year when we went golfing because it was also Ethan's birthday, I normally get the whole day to do whatever I want.  Hubby cooks, cleans, makes the kids help, and generally takes care of business around the house.

On Father's Day, we play.  No cleaning regiment, no extra-special care of one person, just get out and have fun together.  Sure, if it had been only Dad's day, he would not have chosen to spend it in some maniacal children's play place with weary parents and hyperactive kids.  But we did get to play laser tag and fit in a round of mini-golf so it was passable.

I look forward to Father's Day because I know we are going to do something fun together.  Don't get me wrong, I begin counting down to Mother's Day in October.  I relish that whole pampering thing and the fact that hubby makes the kids be nice to each other all day long.  And they listen because it's Mother's Day and that makes it pretty darned special.  But Father's Day is a wonderful day too and I look forward to it also;  in June.  No offence.
