Moms

As of a day or two ago, I am on Twitter.  I have no real idea what to do on there and so I did what most people (I assume - ass of me or not) do: I followed some celebrities.  Twitter offers something kind of cool that I wish Facebook would do - certifies accounts (no offence to the John Mayer I "liked" on Facebook but he's not the one I thought he was and I don't have the heart to "unlike" him...).  Anyhow. So I follow a grand total of 18 people on Twitter.  Of note: Brent Butt (hello Canadian sarcasm), Kelly Oxford (hello Canadian uber-smartmouth-mom) and Steve Martin (hello seventies).

Brent Butt and Kelly Oxford are current to me but Steve Martin?? This got me thinking about my mom of course because she introduced me to Steve Martin's comedy.  And although this post would have been more appropriate on Mother's Day, I was not blogging then.  Today I am and here is a list of some things that I can thank my mom for:
  1. My knowledge of seventies music
  2. Great comedy I did not understand when I was young (See no Evil, Hear no Evil; The Jerk; Monty Python)
  3. Some of that great comedy was great because my mom smoked weed ("Yeah but have you seen it on weed?" - Half Baked)
  4. The one and only issue of Playgirl she hid between the cookbooks
  5. Teaching me that play time with your children will always be remembered by them
And because every foundation is made to be built on, she has instilled in me:
  1. The determination to teach my children about old school music while encouraging them to explore genres of their own
  2. The responsibility to introduce them to great comedy (Wayne's World was a hit and I still love Shrek)
  3. The responsibility to talk to them about drugs...
  4. Talking to them about internet porn because I have none on hand - (F so not looking forward to that one)
  5. The understanding that play time will stay in their memory forever
I always thought my mom was so uncool but when I look back at  things she did and said (that you remember) and I look at the person I am today - I have to say, "wow Mom, you did an awesome job. Thanks!"  And I will tell her about Twitter and maybe she will decide to get on there, if only to "hang out" with Steve Martin while he watches movies and tells you how much they suck.  Hey, thanks to him, I don't think I will waste my time to see Jack Reacher.  Of course, seeing that Tom Cruise was in it pretty much made me decide that anyway.  Mom always said that Steve Martin was the funniest guy she ever saw (she caught him at a surprise performance before he got big) and if he doesn't like it, I'll take his word for it.  Thanks again, Mom.
